Peel The Bark From The Tree

A Solo Exhibition of New Paintings By The Abstract Artist Craig Kerrecoe at Frameworks-Cottenham
Preview Reception on Friday 17th February from 6-9pm!
'The Code' series of abstract paintings, started by Craig Kerrecoe in 2005, has become the cornerstone of his portfolio and has been widely exhibited around the UK and abroad. The series uses a complex language of abstract colour and pattern, designed to convey Kerrecoe's internal conflict to balance his genetically produced instincts with his sense of 'free-will'. His painting 'Dance With Me' from the series, was shortlisted in the 2006 SAA Artist of The Year competition. In 2007/8 he collaborated with the disabled Artist Esther Appleyard BA (Hons) on a joint project featuring paintings from 'The Code' series, entitled 'A Series Of Lines' which was shown at Three Cups Gallery in Ely during May and June, 2007, and then at the prestigious Worcester City Museum & Art Gallery in April/May 2008.
'Peel the bark from the tree', the first solo exhibition by Kerrecoe in three years, presents a new sub-series of heavily textured paintings, produced in response to his involvement with the 'Art At The Manor House' exhibition in aid of The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire & Northamptonshire in December 2011. This new series of paintings, still instantly recognisable as part of 'The Code' series, sees Kerrecoe widening the concept of his abstraction to reflect the notion that all of the internal, entirely personal processes he goes through in order to paint, mirror processes that are prevalent in the natural world- renewal, regeneration & rebirth. The analogy 'peeling bark from a tree' perfectly represents the process of peeling back layers of his own identity to reveal what lies beneath.
Craig, a Building Designer for 15 years now, founded Ovenden Contemporary in 2006 to enable other Artists to benefit from the opportunities he had generated. He has since written articles for several art magazines, as well as correspondence diploma courses at NCFE Level 4. His first book, ‘SELF: Self-portraits from around the world’ was published last year by Beautiful Cariad Books and he wrote a student guidebook for the Open College Of The Arts called ‘The Artist As Entrepreneur’ before that.
His work is held nationally and internationally in private & public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in Wales and the Ray Johnson Permanent Collection in New York. He enjoys representation from several galleries, dealers and agencies, including Siott Gallery in Reading & Alpha Art Gallery in Edinburgh.
Don't miss the Preview Reception on 17th February from 6-9pm when Craig will be in attendance to meet guests!
