Jo Tunmer, Rough with the Smooth

Visual Artist Jo Tunmer holds her first solo show at cambridge contemporary art in May 2019.

Nathalie Staples, Director of cambridge contemporary art, says “CCA is thrilled to be having our first solo show of Jo’s work. The gallery has shown Jo’s work for over 10 years but this is the first time the whole gallery will be dedicated to both Jo’s paintings and prints. This will be a wonderful opportunity to see the numerous techniques which informs Jo’s work and to see how printmaking and painting influence one another.”

The solo show at cambridge contemporary art will showcase a new collection of oil paintings that reflects the landscape from Cambridge city out towards the East Anglian coast.

Jo grew up in London and thrives on the anonymity and comparative privacy that living in a city offers. In response to her urban surroundings she creates hand-pulled solarplate etchings of views of the city that often focus on a solitary figure. In comparison, her oil paintings express a romantic, utopian notion of the land.

Since 2013 Jo has focussed on printmaking. In 2018, alongside running her art practice, she completed a Master’s Degree with distinction in Fine Art Printmaking from Anglia Ruskin University. This period of study enabled Jo to experiment further with wood cut printmaking techniques and fine art installation.

Jo originally trained in Interior Design and Furnishing Textiles before pursuing a career within the corporate sector. Returning to the arts in the millennium she has been a self-employed professional Visual Artist for more than a decade.  Alongside her practice Jo is an Artist Facilitator at , teaches oil painting and printmaking privately and mentors students studying for GCSE and A level Art exams.

Commissioned work includes many pieces for , Cambridge, and more recently a print commission for the new Cambridge Building Society central offices.
