An aged Donald Duck wearing eyeglasses, a symposium of night creatures, a carnival in the night sky, Catherine Cleary’s images come from a reflective practice that uses the chance and accidental opportunities that arise from the process of painting. Her paintings are populated by a diverse range of references to film, myths and stories, animation, folk memory and historical artifacts and are loosely in conversation with the history of English Neo-Romantic painting.
Catherine also makes moving image with Rebecca Ilett: using analogue techniques combined with digital post -production they employ chance and accident to find metaphors, transcend the everyday and create alternative narratives.
Catherine has a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from the University of the Creative Arts and an MA Fine Art (Distinction) from City and Guilds of London Art School. A Turps Art School Painting Correspondent for two years, Catherine has recently completed a Drawing Intensive at The Royal Drawing School.
